Kaʻao to the core.
The Kaʻao Framework Curriculum for Substance Abuse Prevention was adapted, with permission, from Kaʻao: A Framework for Transformation, a Hawaiian Cultural Pedagogy by Dr. Taupōuri Tangarō, Director of Hawaiian Culture and Protocols Engagement for Hawaiʻi Community College and the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. Using the cultural framework of Kaʻao, the curriculum targets community programs to help build identity and resilience. To serve Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders in Hawaiʻi, the curriculum begins with Hawaiian myths that can be juxtaposed with those from Moananuiākea (Pacific Region). This curriculum for cultural resilience, rooted in Kaʻao, supports health education. The Kaʻao framework encourages one to ask themselves three guiding questions:
Who am I?
Where do I belong?
What am I here to do?
